Why a stretch hose rather than a fixed one

A stretch hose does something a rigid hose cannot: it lets the operator move without the machine moving. Six feet of relaxed length becomes considerably more under extension, so reaching under a desk or across a row of seating does not pull on the harness or unbalance the canister on the wearer’s back.

The trade-off is that the hose is a moving part. Every extension flexes the wall, and the cuffs take a twisting load every time the wand is rotated. It is the component on a backpack vacuum most likely to fail from ordinary use rather than from abuse.

When the backpack stretch hose needs replacing

Replace it when you can see cracks or splits in the hose wall, when a cuff has gone loose on the hose or on the wand, when the hose no longer returns towards its relaxed length after being stretched, or when suction is poor with a fresh bag and clean filters.

That last one deserves care. A hose leak is invisible from the outside if the split is in a fold. With the machine running, run a hand slowly along the full length of the hose while flexing it — you will feel air being drawn in at a split you cannot see.

Do not patch a hose with tape. Tape adds a stiff section that concentrates flex either side of the repair, and the hose fails again within inches of the patch.
