The switch on the tool drops a brush strip for hard floors and lifts it away for carpet. That is not cosmetic: on a hard floor the brush stops the nozzle sealing flat and scattering grit, and on carpet the same brush would ride the tool up off the pile and kill the airflow where you need it. Using the wrong setting is the single most common reason a canister “stops picking up”.

When to Replace It

Replace the nozzle when the brush strip has worn down, when the switch no longer moves the brush or will not hold its setting, when the sole plate is worn through, or when a wheel has broken. A worn brush strip shows up as grit being pushed around on hard floors rather than picked up.

Check the setting matches the floor before blaming the machine — it is worth saying to operators explicitly. Clear hair and fibre from the nozzle opening and the wheels regularly, since a partly blocked nozzle mimics a failing motor very convincingly.
