Tornado Brush Shaft 19160
$300.99
Genuine OEM brush shaft (part# 19160) for Tornado MWH-800, Marathon 800 and Marathon 1200 carpet extractors. In stock in Crystal, MN. Call 763-535-0770.
The brush shaft runs through the brush roller and carries the drive from the pulley at one end to the bearing at the other. Everything the brush does passes through it, and because it turns constantly in the wettest part of the machine it is one of the few parts here that genuinely wears rather than simply breaking. Part number 19160 is the genuine OEM shaft for the MWH-800, Marathon 800 and Marathon 1200 extractors.

Shafts fail in two places and both are at the ends. At the drive end, a pulley that has been running loose wallows the shaft where the set screw bears, and once that surface is chewed the pulley will not stay tight no matter how hard the screw is done up. At the bearing end, water that has got past the seal corrodes the journal and the bearing then runs on a rough surface and destroys itself in weeks.
Diagnose by feel rather than by eye. Take the brush out, hold the shaft and spin it in the bearing block: a good shaft turns smoothly with no gritty feel and no side-to-side play. Then look at the drive end for scoring or a flattened set-screw seat, and at the bearing journal for pitting or a dull, matt band where a bright surface should be.
The thing to understand is the chain reaction. A worn journal ruins a bearing, a failing bearing loads the timing belt, and a belt running against a dragging brush strips its teeth. People often replace a belt three times before finding the shaft that has been causing it. If you are on your second or third belt in a season, look at the shaft.
When you fit a new one, replace the bearings and seals with it. They are inexpensive, they are only accessible now, and a new shaft in a worn bearing simply transfers the wear straight back. Check the pulley bore too — if the pulley has been loose long enough to damage the shaft, it has usually damaged itself.
Assemble with the shaft clean and dry, set the pulley so the belt runs square in its teeth, and turn the whole drive by hand before fitting the belt. Anything that binds by hand will bind under power.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Tornado machines does the brush shaft 19160 fit?
It is used on the Tornado 98164 MWH-800 8-gallon self-contained extractor, the 98166 and 98167 20″ Marathon 800, the 98168 12 Gallon Self Contained extractor and the 98168 20″ Marathon 1200 in all series. Call 763-535-0770 with your model number if you are not sure.
How do I know the brush shaft is worn?
Take the brush out, hold the shaft and spin it in the bearing block. A good shaft turns smoothly with no gritty feel and no side-to-side play. Then look at the drive end for a flattened set-screw seat, and at the bearing journal for pitting or a dull matt band where the surface should be bright.
I keep going through brush belts — could the shaft be why?
Very likely. A worn journal ruins a bearing, a failing bearing loads the timing belt, and a belt fighting a dragging brush strips its teeth. If you are on your second or third belt in a season, look at the shaft and bearings rather than buying another belt.
