The brush shroud is the cover that encloses the brush and seals the working area so the vacuum nozzle can do its job. It keeps spray where it belongs, stops the brush throwing solution around the room, and forms one wall of the airflow path. Part number 31754 is the genuine OEM brush shroud assembly for the MWH-800, Marathon 800 and Marathon 1200 extractors.

A damaged shroud shows up as mess before it shows up as poor cleaning. Solution flicking onto skirting boards and furniture legs means the shroud is no longer containing the brush. That is worth fixing on a customer site for reasons beyond the machine.
The cleaning problem follows. The shroud is part of the seal that lets the nozzle pull air through the pile rather than around it, so a cracked or distorted shroud lets the machine draw the easy air instead of the wet air. The carpet comes up wetter, the operator slows down to compensate, and the job takes longer for a worse result.
Inspect it with the shroud open. Look at the sealing edge all the way round for flat spots, splits and sections that have gone hard. Then close and latch it and look at the gap along the edge: even and small is right, wedge-shaped means either the shroud or the hinge and bracket that carry it have moved. Check the hinge and latch before condemning the shroud, since all of them produce the same gap.
The usual damage is impact and leverage — a machine dropped on its front, or a shroud forced shut over a jammed brush. The second cause is heat and detergent hardening the sealing edge over years until it no longer conforms to the floor.
Fit the replacement with the machine unplugged, tipped and supported. Transfer the hinge and latch parts and set the shroud so it closes with an even gap before tightening anything. Check the shroud gasket at the same time — it is the cheapest part of the seal and a new shroud against a flattened gasket still leaks.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Tornado machines does the brush shroud assembly 31754 fit?
It is used on the Tornado 98164 MWH-800 8-gallon self-contained extractor, the 98166 and 98167 20″ Marathon 800, the 98168 12 Gallon Self Contained extractor and the 98168 20″ Marathon 1200 in all series. Call 763-535-0770 with your model number if you are not sure.
My machine is flicking solution onto skirting boards — is the shroud the cause?
Almost certainly. Containing the brush is one of the shroud’s two jobs, so spray escaping onto furniture legs and skirting means it is cracked, distorted or no longer closing evenly. Check the sealing edge all round with the shroud open.
Could a damaged shroud be why the carpet comes up wet?
Yes. The shroud forms one wall of the airflow path, so a cracked or distorted one lets the nozzle draw easy air from outside instead of wet air through the pile. Before ordering, check the hinge and latch too — both produce the same uneven gap along the shroud edge.
