This is the brush roller supplied complete — roller, shaft and bearing hardware as one unit rather than as separate pieces to be assembled. Buying it complete is the right call in two situations. The first is a machine that has to go back out today: swapping a whole assembly takes minutes where rebuilding one takes an afternoon, and the old unit can be stripped and rebuilt on the bench at leisure. The second is a roller where more than one thing has gone — worn bristles plus a scored shaft plus tired bearings — where the separate parts add up to close to the assembly price anyway.
If only the bristles are worn, buy the roller on its own. That is the single most common failure and it is a fraction of the cost. Compare bristle height in the centre of the roller against the ends: the middle carries the load and wears first, and a roller that has lost visible height there is no longer working the pile even though it still turns at the right speed.
Before fitting any new roller, find out what damaged the old one. A seized bearing, a dragging bearing block or a belt run bar-tight will destroy a new assembly as efficiently as it destroyed the last. Turn the drive by hand with the belt off and feel for roughness or resistance; clear string and fibre out of the pulley teeth and the shaft ends properly rather than just pulling the visible strands.
Fitting is straightforward with the machine unplugged, tipped and supported. Release the bearing blocks, slide the old assembly out and the new one in the same orientation, and check the drive end seats fully in its pulley. Turn everything by hand before the belt goes on — anything that binds by hand will bind under power.
Two habits protect it. Do not run the brush on hard floor or over transition strips, which abrades the tips far faster than carpet does, and do not park the machine down on its brush overnight, which puts a flat in the bristles that never fully recovers.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Tornado machines does the complete brush roller assembly 31806 fit?
It is used on the Tornado 98164 MWH-800 8-gallon self-contained extractor, the 98166 and 98167 20″ Marathon 800, the 98168 12 Gallon Self Contained extractor and the 98168 20″ Marathon 1200 in all series. Call 763-535-0770 with your model number if you are not sure.
Should I buy the complete assembly or just the roller?
Buy the roller alone if only the bristles are worn — that is the commonest failure and a fraction of the cost. Buy the complete assembly when more than one thing has gone, or when the machine has to be back in service today and you want to rebuild the old unit on the bench afterwards.
How do I stop the new one wearing out as fast?
Find out what damaged the old one first: a seized bearing, a dragging bearing block or a belt run bar-tight will destroy a new assembly just as quickly. Then keep the brush off hard floor and transition strips, and store the machine on its wheels rather than parked down on the brush.
