Brass is used here rather than nylon because this fitting is made and unmade during service and has to survive being tightened by hand more than once. Part number 19189 is the genuine Tacony brass adaptor fitting for the Marathon 800, Marathon 1200 and Marathon 2000 extractors.

The commonest reason this fitting gets replaced is not failure but over-tightening. Brass is soft. A fitting cranked down hard into a plastic port, or done up with a wrench when it needed a firm hand, deforms at the taper and will not seal afterwards no matter how hard it is tightened next time. If you are chasing a weep at this joint and each attempt needs more force than the last, the fitting has already gone.

The second failure is galvanic. Brass in contact with dissimilar metal in a wet, salted environment corrodes at the junction, and detergent solution is a good electrolyte. A fitting showing green deposit at its shoulder has been corroding for a while and is thinner than it looks.

Third is the thread itself. Every time a fitting is removed for service the tape or sealant has to be cleaned off properly. A thread reassembled over old tape seals unevenly and then loosens, and the fitting takes the blame for a preparation problem.

Fit it hand-tight plus a small turn with fresh sealant on the taper. Do not reach for a wrench unless the joint is still weeping after that. Support the port with a second tool if it is in plastic, so the tightening torque goes into the joint rather than into cracking the body it screws into — that crack is a far more expensive problem than the fitting.

Check the run either side while it is apart. A fitting that has been weeping has usually been dripping onto something, and solution finding its way onto wiring or into a bearing is the real cost of a joint that was left to seep.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Tornado machines does the brass adaptor fitting 19189 fit?

It is used on the Tornado 98166 and 98167 20″ Marathon 800 carpet extractors, the Tornado 98168 12 Gallon Self Contained extractor, the 98168 20″ Marathon 1200 in all series, the 98169 20″ Marathon 1200 and the 98190 22″ Marathon 2000. Call 763-535-0770 if your machine is not listed.

My fitting keeps weeping and needs more force each time — why?

Because it has already deformed. Brass is soft, and a fitting cranked down hard or tightened with a wrench when it needed a firm hand distorts at the taper and will not seal again. Replace it rather than tightening further, and support the port with a second tool so the torque does not crack the body it screws into.

Why brass rather than a nylon fitting?

Because this joint is made and unmade during service and has to survive repeated hand tightening, which nylon does not do as well. The trade-off is that brass corrodes galvanically where it meets dissimilar metal in detergent solution — a green deposit at the shoulder means the fitting is thinner than it looks.
