This is the driving pulley on the brush motor shaft, supplied with both of its 8-32 x 1/4 inch set screws. Two screws rather than one is deliberate: this pulley is applying torque rather than receiving it, and a single screw on a driving pulley works loose. Part number 32175 is the genuine OEM motor pulley. It also fits the Tornado 98166 20″ Marathon 800 carpet extractor (8 Gallon, 115V). It also fits the Tornado 98167 20″ Marathon 800 carpet extractor (8 Gallon, 230V).

Both screws have to be tight, and one of the commonest faults here is a pulley running on one. It feels secure by hand, it drives normally on light work, and it slips the first time the brush loads up. If you are diagnosing intermittent brush drive, check both screws before anything else — and check that both are actually present, because they are small and easily lost during a belt change.

Torque direction matters on the driving side. The motor accelerates this pulley from rest thousands of times a day, and every start is a shock load through those two screws into the motor shaft flat. A screw that backs off even slightly lets the pulley move a fraction on each start, and that movement is what hammers the flat out of shape.

Inspect the motor shaft as well as the pulley bore. A wallowed flat on the motor shaft is a far more serious problem than a worn pulley — it means the next pulley will not hold either, and the fix is at the motor end.

Check tooth wear against the driven pulley at the brush. Rounded crests on either one will strip belts regardless of how new the belt is, and a machine that has eaten two or three belts usually has at least one pulley past its life.

Fit with the shaft clean and both set screws seated on the flat, tightened evenly and firmly — 8-32 is small and strips easily. Check the two pulley faces line up with a straight edge before the belt goes on; misalignment here comes from the motor base and is worth correcting first.

Frequently Asked Questions

What machines does the motor pulley 32175 fit?

Call 763-535-0770 with your model and serial number and we will confirm fitment before you order It also fits the Tornado 98167 Marathon 800 (8 Gallon, 230V).

Why does this pulley have two set screws?

Because it is the driving pulley. It applies torque rather than receiving it, and the motor shock-loads it from rest thousands of times a day. A single screw on a driving pulley works loose, and a pulley running on one of its two screws feels secure by hand and slips the first time the brush loads up.

My brush drive is intermittent — where do I look first?

At both set screws, including whether both are still there — they are small and easily lost during a belt change. Then at the motor shaft flat: if a loose screw has hammered it out of shape, a new pulley will not hold either and the fix is at the motor end.
