A KEPS nut is a hex nut assembled with a free-spinning external-tooth washer permanently retained under its bearing face. The washer turns with the nut as it is run down, then its teeth bite into the mating surface as the joint is tightened, giving a locking action and a spread bearing face in a single part. The practical advantage on an assembly line — and in a repair — is that there is one component to handle instead of two, and the washer cannot be dropped or left out.
Because the locking action depends on those teeth biting, a KEPS nut that has been fitted and removed a few times loses effectiveness as the teeth blunt. Replace any nut whose washer has come loose from the nut body or spins with excessive play, whose teeth are visibly rounded, or whose hex flats have been rounded by a slipping wrench. A KEPS nut that can be spun off by hand from a fully tightened joint has stopped locking.
