What the Locking Latch does

The latch engages a feature on the pack and holds it down against the ejector springs, which are constantly trying to push the pack out. That means it is loaded the entire time a battery is fitted, not only when the machine is moving. It works against the slider and the ejector, so a fault in any one of the three shows up as a battery that will not stay put or will not come out.

Signs the Locking Latch needs replacing

Replace it as soon as a pack can be lifted out without pressing the release, or if the latch has to be held while the pack is pushed home. A latch with a rounded or chipped engagement face will still hold on a bench and let go when the machine is knocked, which is the worst kind of failure. Check it whenever a battery is reported as coming loose in use, even if it looks intact.

Fitting the Locking Latch

Take the pack out and leave it out. The latch lifts out of its seat once its fixing is removed; note which way round it sits, because a latch fitted reversed will appear to work but will not hold under load. Fit the new one, work it several times by hand, then fit the pack and try to lift it out without pressing the release — it should not move.

Almost certainly. A pack that leaves the bay on its own means the latch is no longer engaging, either because its face is worn or chipped or because it has broken. Do not run the machine until it is replaced.
