Small washers matter more than large ones in one specific way: they are usually under small screws, and small screws are the ones going into thin material or into plastic. That is exactly where a head pulled directly against the surface digs a crater, and once the crater is there the screw will never stay tight again no matter how often it is retightened.

They are also the ones most often left out. A #10 washer is easy to lose on a bench, easy to overlook during reassembly, and small enough that nobody notices its absence until a panel starts rattling. If you are diagnosing a fixing that will not stay tight after a previous repair, count what should be in the stack before replacing anything bigger.

Fit matters as much here as at larger sizes. A washer sized for 1/4 inch on a #10 screw contacts the head on a narrow ring at the edge of its bore and does very little, while looking entirely plausible. Measure the bore rather than matching by eye.

Stainless is specified because these positions are wet. Do not mix a plated washer into a stainless joint — dissimilar metals in detergent corrode galvanically at the junction.

Replace if dished or pitted, and order a handful rather than one. At this size they are the definition of a part you should not have to wait for.

Frequently Asked Questions

What machines does the washer 17850 fit?

It is fitted to the Tornado 98168 12 Gallon Self Contained carpet extractor and the 98168 20″ Marathon 1200 in all series, and it is shared across many other machines. Call 763-535-0770 with your model and serial number and we will confirm fitment before you order It also fits the Tornado 98167 Marathon 800 (8 Gallon, 230V).

Why does a small washer matter?

Because small screws usually go into thin material or plastic, and that is exactly where a head pulled directly against the surface digs a crater. Once the crater is there the screw will not stay tight again however often it is retightened.

Can I use a 1/4 inch washer on a #10 screw?

No. A washer sized for 1/4 inch on a #10 screw contacts the head on a narrow ring at the edge of its bore and does almost nothing, while looking entirely plausible in place. Measure the bore of the old one rather than matching by eye.
