Genuine OEM heavy hex jam nut, 5/16-18, zinc plated (part# 05282), for Tornado carpet extractors including the 98168 Marathon 1200. In stock in Crystal, MN. Call 763-535-0770.

A jam nut is a thin nut, and a heavy jam nut is a thin nut with a larger across-flats dimension. Part number 05282 is the genuine OEM 5/16-18 heavy hex jam nut, zinc plated. The combination is specific and it is not interchangeable with a standard nut of the same thread.

Jam nuts do one of two jobs. Either they lock a second nut or an adjustable fitting in position, or they fit where there is simply not the axial room for a full-height nut. Knowing which job yours is doing changes how it goes back on: as a locking nut it is tightened against the part it is locking, not against the joint, and the order of tightening matters.

The thin section is the whole design and also the limit. A jam nut cannot develop the clamping force of a full-height nut and must not be used as one — if you find a jam nut alone on a joint that is carrying load, someone has substituted it for a finished hex nut and the joint is weaker than it looks.

Heavy means the flats are larger than standard for the thread, so a standard 5/16 spanner may not fit. That is worth knowing before you are under a machine: check the size on the old nut rather than assuming.

Zinc plating is the corrosion barrier. A nut whose plating has been chewed by a slipping spanner, or that shows rust, will seize on its thread — and a seized jam nut is hard to grip because there is so little height to get a wrench onto.

Fit with clean threads to a firm rather than maximum torque, and replace rather than reuse if the flats have been rounded at all. There is very little metal in a jam nut to spare.

Frequently Asked Questions

What machines does the nut 05282 fit?

It is fitted to the Tornado 98168 12 Gallon Self Contained carpet extractor and the 98168 20″ Marathon 1200 in all series, and it is shared across many other machines. Call 763-535-0770 with your model and serial number and we will confirm fitment before you order.

What is a heavy jam nut?

A thin nut with a larger across-flats dimension than standard for its thread. The thin section suits it to locking a second nut or an adjustable fitting in place, or to positions with no axial room for a full-height nut. The larger flats mean a standard 5/16 spanner may not fit — check the old nut before you are under the machine.

Can a jam nut carry load on its own?

No. It cannot develop the clamping force of a full-height nut and must not be used as one. If you find a jam nut alone on a loaded joint, someone has substituted it for a finished hex nut and the joint is weaker than it looks.
