Tornado Brass Screw 3/8-16 x 1″ 03913
$4.99
Genuine OEM brass screw, 3/8-16 by 1 inch (part# 03913), for Tornado MWH-800, Marathon 800, Marathon 1200 and 99307 Floorkeeper machines. In stock in Crystal, MN. Call 763-535-0770.
Brass rather than steel, and that is the whole point of this fastener. Where a screw sits in standing detergent solution or threads into a dissimilar metal, a steel screw seizes and then shears on removal. Part number 03913 is the genuine OEM 3/8-16 by 1 inch brass screw.

Do not substitute a steel screw of the same size because it is what is in the drawer. It will fit, it will tighten, and in two years it will be welded into its thread by corrosion. Removing a seized steel screw from a soft or plated boss usually takes the boss with it, and that turns a two-dollar part into a housing repair.
The trade-off is that brass is soft. It will not take the torque a steel fastener will, and a brass screw cranked down hard either strips its own thread or rounds its drive recess. Tighten to firm and stop — on this machine the joint is holding position, not carrying structural load.
Inspect a used one before refitting. A brass screw that has been over-tightened shows a slightly stretched thread near the head and a drive recess that no longer takes a clean bite. Green deposit means it has been corroding at a junction with a dissimilar metal, and a screw with a green collar is thinner than it looks.
Treat it as single use in any position that matters. It costs very little, and a brass screw reused three times has been work-hardened by each cycle of tightening and will eventually snap on the fourth — usually flush with the surface, which is the worst possible place.
Order a few. Fasteners are the parts that go missing during a strip-down and hold up a job overnight, and this one is not a size most workshops keep in brass.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Tornado machines does the brass screw 03913 fit?
It is used on the Tornado 98164 MWH-800 8-gallon self-contained extractor, the 98166 and 98167 20″ Marathon 800, the 98168 12 Gallon Self Contained extractor, the 98168 20″ Marathon 1200 in all series, the 98169 20″ Marathon 1200 and the 99307 26″ Mid-Range Floorkeeper. Call 763-535-0770 if your machine is not listed.
Can I use a steel screw of the same size instead?
It will fit and tighten, and in two years it will be welded into its thread by corrosion. Removing a seized steel screw from a soft or plated boss usually takes the boss with it, which turns a two-dollar part into a housing repair. The brass is there to prevent exactly that.
How tight should a brass screw be?
Firm and no more. Brass is soft and will not take the torque a steel fastener will — cranked down hard it strips its own thread or rounds the drive recess. On this machine the joint is holding position rather than carrying structural load, so there is nothing to gain from extra force.
