A full recovery tank is the heaviest single thing on the machine, and this bracket is what keeps it seated in the chassis while the machine is wheeled, tipped and loaded into vehicles. Part number 19272 is the genuine OEM recovery tank retaining bracket for the MWH-800, Marathon 800 and Marathon 1200 extractors.

A failed bracket rarely announces itself until the tank moves. What you notice first is a tank that no longer sits square, or one that can be rocked by hand when it should be solid. After that comes the consequence: a tank free to shift works its seals, strains the pipework at the fittings and can break the vacuum seal at the lid, which costs suction across the whole machine.

Inspect the bracket rather than the tank when suction has fallen and the usual suspects check out. A bracket bent out of shape, or one whose mounting holes have elongated, lets the tank sit a few millimetres low — enough to stop the lid gasket sealing evenly while everything still looks normal from outside.

The usual cause is lifting. These machines are routinely picked up by whatever is to hand, and the tank bracket is exactly the sort of convenient edge that gets used as a grab point. It is not a handle and it will bend if it is treated as one. A bracket that has been bent and straightened is on borrowed time; the metal has already been worked.

Fit the replacement with the machine unplugged and the tank out. Mark the bracket position before it comes off and fit the new one to that mark, because a bracket set a little high or low changes the tank seating and therefore the lid seal. Seat the tank, close the lid and check the gasket compresses evenly all round before the machine goes back to work.

With the tank out you also have access to the seating gasket and the tank fittings. Both are inexpensive, both are only reachable now, and a tank held correctly against a flattened gasket still leaks air.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Tornado machines does the recovery tank retaining bracket 19272 fit?

It is used on the Tornado 98164 MWH-800 8-gallon self-contained extractor, the 98166 and 98167 20″ Marathon 800, the 98168 12 Gallon Self Contained extractor and the 98168 20″ Marathon 1200 in all series. Call 763-535-0770 with your model number if you are not sure.

How do I know the bracket has failed?

Try to rock the recovery tank by hand when it is seated. It should be solid. A tank that moves, or that no longer sits square, means the bracket has bent or its mounting holes have opened out. Both let the tank sit low enough to stop the lid gasket sealing evenly.

Could a bent bracket be why my suction is down?

Yes, and it is easy to miss. A tank sitting a few millimetres low stops the lid gasket compressing evenly, which bleeds air into the vacuum path while everything looks normal from outside. Check the bracket when suction has dropped and the hose, filter and standpipe all check out.
