Choosing Tornado 98166 accessories for the Marathon 800
Every accessory on this page is listed on the Marathon 800’s own accessories sheet, so each one is confirmed for the machine rather than assumed from a connector size. Most of them also fit the Marathon 1200 and Marathon 2000, and several fit the Surge extractors, the ProSpot and PS-series spotters and the CarpetRinser/Dryer range — the compatibility list on each product page spells out exactly which machines are confirmed for that part.
The number that decides most of these choices is the pressure rating. The 1-1/2 inch cuff is standard across the range, which means almost any of these tools will physically connect to almost any of these machines — and that is exactly why people get caught out. A tool rated to 120 p.s.i. fitted behind a pump delivering 400 will leak at the head within a few jobs, and a 100 p.s.i. hose behind an 800 p.s.i. stair tool will fail at the hose rather than at the tool. Work out what your pump actually delivers, then treat every rating on this page as a ceiling rather than a target, and check the hose at the same time you change a wand.
After that it is about the work. Stainless heads take the abuse of commercial stair and upholstery work and of being run against hard trim; plastic heads are gentler on wool carpet and on painted or varnished nosings but wear faster and carry lower ratings. A narrow head gets into corners and along nosings; a wide head covers an open tread or a cushion face in fewer passes. For hoses, a short ten-foot assembly is easier to handle when the machine can sit beside you, and the Insider assembly keeps the solution line inside the vacuum hose so there is nothing on the outside to snag on furniture.
Twin City Vacuum has been selling and servicing Tornado equipment since 1956. If you are not sure which tool or hose suits the way you work, call 763-535-0770 with your model and serial number and we will go through it with you before you order.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which wand should I use on my Tornado 98166 Marathon 800?
Match the wand to the pressure your pump delivers, then to the work. The double-bend wand with the brass valve (part# PFX-NS.1) is rated to 100 p.s.i. and is the comfortable all-day choice; the double-jet wand (part# PFX-2HP) is rated to 200 p.s.i. and lays solution evenly across the full pass width so you cover ground in fewer passes.
How do I choose between the stair tools?
By pressure rating first, then head width. The 6 in. stainless tool (part# AA192.1) is rated to 800 p.s.i. and reaches tight treads, nosings and riser corners. The 30 in. tool with the 10 in. head (part# AA173.1) is rated to 500 p.s.i. and lets you work a flight standing upright. The 8 in. plastic-head tool (part# AA174.1) is rated to 120 p.s.i. and is gentler on delicate carpet and finished nosings.
Does my hose need to match the pressure of my wand?
Yes, and it is the thing most often missed. The lowest-rated component in the chain sets your working pressure, and a hose behind a high-pressure wand is where the failure happens. The standard assembly (part# 95567A) is rated to 100 p.s.i.; the Insider assembly (part# 1506WDSI-T) is rated to 400 p.s.i. and runs the solution line inside the vacuum hose so nothing snags.
