This page covers the brushroll and its bearings and bearing shields, the brush motor and drive belt, the brush housing and brush lift pedal with its bracket and linkage, the pulleys, spacers, nuts, washers and E-rings that hold the drive together, the rectifier and wiring on the motor side, and the safety and instruction labels that sit on this assembly.
How to find the right Tornado 98170 brush parts
Every row in the table below is numbered to match the exploded diagram, so the quickest way to identify a part is to find its number on the drawing and read across. If the brush has stopped turning but the motor still runs, check the drive belt first — a stretched or snapped belt is the most common failure on this assembly by a wide margin. If the brush turns but squeals or drags, look at the bearings and bearing shields. If the brushroll will not lower onto the carpet, check the brush lift pedal, its bracket and the linkage. If the motor itself is silent, work through the rectifier and the wiring before condemning the motor. Not sure which part you need? Call us at 763-535-0770 with your model and serial number and we will confirm it before you order.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know which Tornado 98170 brush part I need?
Every row in the table on this page carries the same number as the balloon on the diagram above it, so the fastest route is to find the part on the drawing and read its number off, then match that number in the # column. Hovering a dot on the diagram shows the part name and part number before you click. If the number on your sheet does not match what you see here, call 763-535-0770 with the serial number from the machine and we will check the revision.
What size is the brushroll on the Tornado Marathon SE 900?
The brushroll fitted to the 98170 brush assembly is 3″ x 18″, part number X9070. It runs on the brush axle X9017 with a bearing X9001, bearing shield X9019 and nylon spacers X9018 at each end, and is driven from the brush motor through the motor pulley X9116, drive belt X9004 and brush pulley X9117.
Why does the brush drive belt on my 98170 keep breaking?
A belt that fails repeatedly is usually reporting something else. Check that the brushroll turns freely by hand with the belt off: if it drags, the bearings or the axle are the real fault and a new belt will go the same way. Also check the motor pulley set screws, the pulley alignment and the belt cover for rubbing. Replace the belt X9004 only once the brush turns freely and the pulleys line up.
Can I buy the Tornado 98170 brush assembly complete instead of individual parts?
Yes. Part number X9438 is the complete brush assembly, supplied built up with the brushroll, axle, bearings, pulley, belt and covers already fitted. It is the not-shown item at the foot of the table. For a single worn belt or brushroll the individual part is cheaper; the complete assembly is the better buy once bearings, axle and pulley have all gone together.
